Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a man in connection with an armed robbery at a gas station Sunday night.

Deputies responded to the Scotchman gas station located at the intersection of Market Street and Middle Sound Loop Road around 9:47 p.m., according to sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.

The clerk reported that a man walked up to the counter, pulled a tire iron from his jacket and demanded money. The suspect – described as a 6-foot-tall white male who wore a black jacket – reportedly ran with the cash out of the store and across the street, where he got into a 4-door white Honda Civic.

Deputies tried to stop a vehicle matching the description but the vehicle sped away, Brewer said. The deputies were able to stop the vehicle later on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

The suspect in the vehicle – 32-year-old Michael Thomas Arslan – was arrested and taken into custody, Brewer said. He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $75,000 secured bond.
