Wrestling Bucs, West Brunswick represent area in dual team brackets

The reigning Mideastern Conference Champion Laney High School Wrestling Bucs will host the opening rounds of this year’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association Dual Meets on Tuesday.

Currently ranked No. 5 in the state, Laney finished the regular season 29-0 overall and 6-0 in league play.

The Bucs had four individual winners at the Mideastern Conference meet held at Ashley High School over the weekend to edge West Brunswick, 269-267, for the team title.

Senior David Bostian claimed his fourth individual conference crown at 138-pounds, while Kevin Saravia, Cael Willis and Hunter Starling also earned first place and a spot in the upcoming 4A regional.

Laney faces Leesville Road (35-4) in the first-round, while Pinecrest (23-5) takes on Cary (21-6). Both meets begin at 6 p.m. at Trask Middle School on Tuesday. The winners will square off later in the night for a chance to compete in the Dual Wrestling Quarterfinals later this week.

West Brunswick was right on Laney’s tail all season and the Trojans will travel to Swansboro for 3A Dual Team competition. West Brunswick finished the regular season with a 19-2 mark and face Northwood High School (26-3) in first round action. Swansboro (23-5) competes against Rocky Mount (22-19) in the other dual meet.

The Trojans collected seven individual titles during the Mideastern Conference Championship at Ashley.

Dual team quarterfinal and semifinal meets are set for Feb. 4, with the NCHSAA Championships on Feb. 6. Grapplers who qualified as individuals will compete in the regional tournament beginning on Feb. 12.
