Julian F. Sykes, 94, WWII vet who enjoyed playing poker and bridge

Julian F. Sykes, 94, of Hampstead, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016.

Julian was predeceased by his wife, Eloise, and his parents, Guy and Eula Sykes.

Surviving Julian are twin sons, Ronald Augustus Sykes of Wilmington and Donald Batson Sykes of Raleigh; grandchildren, Lori Beth Sykes of Raleigh and Jeff S. Sykes of Miami, Florida; and nephews, Neil Sykes Williamson and wife, Doris, of Burlington, James Thomas Williamson of Raleigh, and Stewart Edwards of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Julian enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After returning from the service, he and Eloise were happily married for 64 years.

Mr. Sykes worked for General Adjustment Bureau in Petersburg, Virginia and later joined United States Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Company, where he served in various capacities, including supervisor of the Claims Department and later as a special agent until his retirement.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing poker and, occasionally, bridge. In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing and shrimping. He was an active member of Topsail Presbyterian Church and served as an elder.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Topsail Presbyterian Church, with a brief visitation following the service.
