George R. Gaines, 71, of Hampstead, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.

After many years of failing health, we lost a wonderful man. George was the fourteenth of 16 children of Carl and Laura Gaines of Goldston.

He was known for his wonderful smile, personality, generosity and never meeting a stranger.

As a Master Barber, he had one of the largest clienteles in Wilmington, working at Seagate Barber Shop, Hanover Barber Shop and later owning Ogden Barber Shop.

As an avid fisherman, he enjoyed many a day on the water. He loved sharing his knowledge and stories of successful catches.

Heartbroken, his wife, Rachel, and step-daughter, Amanda Hassell Scott, will be forever grateful to have been loved by this special man.

There are so many people in his life that could be named, but we can only mention several. His ex-wife, Linda Newell Newber of Wilmington; Dudley Malpass, who visited often; and our friend Reta McGuire, who was always with us during our hospital stays and helped us to recover.

At his request, there will be a simple celebration of life from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service on Oleander Drive in Wilmington. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at Antioch Baptist Church on Goldston-Glendon Road in Goldston. Family will receive friends afterwards in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or to a charity of one’s choice.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service.
