Hester Edwards Nicholson, 98, avid bridge player who enjoyed traveling with friends

Hester Edwards Nicholson, 98, of Carvers Creek, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Wilmington on Sept. 6, 1917 to the late Daniel Edwards and Betty Hester Edwards.

Hester was a secretary at Block Shirt Factory and later at Federal Paper. She taught Sunday school at Carver’s Creek United Methodist Church. Hester was an avid bridge player. She loved the beach, shopping and enjoyed traveling with her friends. She was very kind and giving and was always helping others. She married J.K. Nicholson, Jr., who was an Army officer in World War II.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, of 61 years, J.K. Nicholson, Jr.; brothers, Homer, Alden, Elmer, Deloirmer and Greer Edwards; and a sister, Mabel Taylor. Survivors include her niece, Doris Cavanaugh; nephew, Edwin Taylor; and special caretakers, Agusta Burnett and Mary Jane Graham.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8 at Carver’s Creek United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 6 p.m.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Jack Skipper, Curtis Coleman, David Settlemeyer, Billy Settlemeyer, Jack West, Danny McDuffie, Tim Stevens and Kenny Soles.  Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington.
