Longtime baseball enthusiast Jason Bentzler has been named head baseball coach at Laney High School. Bentzler replaces Aaron Livengood, who was approved as an Assistant Principal at Laney during the New Hanover County Board of Education meeting in December.
Livengood spent the last four years as leader of the Bucs, while Bentzler served as an assistant coach at Laney for the past eight seasons.
“This is exciting,” said Bentzler, who served as the first head coach at Heidi Trask High School from 2002-07. “It’s bittersweet seeing Aaron leave, but happy he’s in a good place to move on. This is a great opportunity for me.”
During his 19-year coaching career, Bentlzer credits his colleagues with helping shape his philosophy on the diamond. His history in the game dates back to his student teaching days at Pembroke State (UNC-Pembroke), while making the rounds across the area before landing at Laney as an assistant.
“Having worked with the kids gives me familiarity to improve and grow and get better,” Bentzler added. “I want to help them be successful. I’ve coached with some great people and learned a lot along the way. All the years of experience definitely pay off when you get to this level.”
