John Roger Lewis, 77, of Oak Island passed away Saturday, Jan. 2 at Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Bolivia.

Mr. Lewis was born July 6, 1938 in Greensboro, son of the late AJ Lewis and Virginia Pegram Lewis. He was a veteran of the United States Marines. Mr. Lewis served on the Greensboro Fire Department for many years and also retired from Sears and Roebuck as a truck driver. He and his family moved in 1998 to Oak Island, where he worked in security. He enjoyed walking on the beach and searching for seashells.

Survivors include his wife Mary Frances Lewis of Oak Island; three children, Darrell Lewis of Oak Island, Cheryl Lewis Hayes of Siler City, and Jeff Lewis of Siler City; two sisters, Ann Smith of Georgia, and Susan Bozovich of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Peacock-Newnam and White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.
