Frederick “Fred” A. Getsinger, 79, of Wilmington, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.

Fred was born on June 30, 1936 in Slovan, Pennsylvania to the late Rudolph and Mary Ellen Getsinger and raised in Weirton, West Virginia. He is also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah C. Price and brother, Kenneth Getsinger.

Fred is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruthann L. Getsinger; children, Terri Robertson (David), Kris Getsinger and Cynthia Price (Jamie); grandchildren, Steven Wirth, Lindsay Mortensen, Kace Getsinger, Kyle Price and Stephanie Price; great-grandchildren, Maddox, Finnian, Crosby and Declan; and brother, Karl Getsinger (Donna).

Fred served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He graduated in 1962 from West Virginia University (WVU). He retired after 27 years with Sea-Land Service and later retired after 10 years with the North Carolina Port Authority in Wilmington.

Fred loved his Pittsburgh Steelers, ice cream, golfing and WVU football, but not necessarily in that order. He was an active member of St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Above all, Fred was devoted to his wife and family, whom he loved dearly. He will be deeply missed by all.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Zumwalt officiating. Burial will follow at Seagate Cemetery. There will be a reception at the church following the burial.

Memorials may be made to either St. Matthews or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
