Born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1933, and educated in the local schools, Mr. Pyle worked his way through Bowdoin College by lecturing to tourists at Plymouth Rock. After graduation, he served as a second lieutenant in the Army and was employed by telephone companies in Virginia and Florida before moving to the Washington, DC area. There he worked for the Department of Agriculture, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Army General staff, and the Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Pyle’s work as a management analyst took him across the globe, from Hawaii to Saudi Arabia. He also obtained a master’s degree from George Washington University, attended the Army War College, and spent weekends guiding school groups around the nation’s capital.

In 1993, Mr. Pyle married Linda (Holliday) Owen, and in 2000, upon their retirements, they moved to Wilmington, where he enrolled in the Wilmington Citizens Academy and served on the boards of the Cape Fear Jazz Society, the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and the Cape Fear River Watch. Mr. Pyle served as president of the Senior Men’s Club. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he volunteered for numerous projects and committees. An avid sailor, Mr. Pyle raced his Lightning out of the Carolina Yacht Club and competed in numerous regattas up and down the east coast.

In addition to his wife of 22 years, Mr. Pyle is survived by his daughter Carolyn Pyle-Duke (from his first marriage), her husband David Duke, of Port Royal, Virginia, and their four children, Arthur, Chester, Hamilton, and Marie. Also surviving are two step families, Alan and Suzanne Owen of Frisco, Texas, and their son Tripp, and Peter and Leigh Anne Owen of Charles Town, West Virginia, and their children, Brenden and McKenna; Mr. Pyle’s brother, Christopher and his wife Cynthia of South Hadley, Massachusetts, and their sons Jeffrey and Jonathan.
