Cathy Lynne Harris Skipper Ofsharick, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 69.
She was born November 30, 1946 in Raleigh, North Carolina to the late John and Margaret Harris. Cathy is also preceded in death by her husband, Michael Ofsharick.
Cathy was the oldest child in a family of big personalities.
She was kind, loving, beautiful, generous and one of the most stubborn women ever born. She always marched to her own drum in a band that no one else could hear. Her determination to follow her own path ensured that her family and friends would always remember her with a chuckle and a sense of exasperation. She instilled in her children the value of unconditional love and acceptance for which they are eternally grateful. She was, just like her sisters and brother, a junker. Even in the worst days she wanted to go and find that special piece that she knew was just waiting for her at Goodwill. Cathy had style and a sense of flair that she maintained to the very last while wearing her favorite lipstick. Cathy said of her husband, Michael, that after four marriages she had finally got it right. She delighted in being a grandmother and enjoyed shocking her grandchildren with saucy tales – they know what we mean. Her fondest memory was clamming with her own mother at Fort Fisher where they would compete to see who ended up with the most clams. She requested that her ashes be spread there so that she could always remain in that memory. We will miss her.
She is survived by her children; daughter, Jennifer (Burt) Sampson, of Wilmington; son, Joseph (Beth) Neely of Aiken, South Carolina; grandchildren, Samantha (Jake), Marisa, Christopher, Reed, Caleb, Zack and Justin; siblings, Evelyn (Paul) McMichael of Round Hill, Virginia, Jessie (Dale) Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina, John (Bruce) Harris of Denver, North Carolina, Debbie Miller of Wilmington and Angela Harris of Leland; many nieces and nephews and her constant canine companion, Max.
Cathy said her last birthday celebrated on November 28 was the best ever and thank you to all who attended and made her smile.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.
There will be a reception immediately following the service at Jennifer and Burton Sampson’s home.
