UNCW senior defender Michael Mecham will not have to travel far to begin his professional soccer career after signing with Wilmington Hammerheads FC of the United Soccer League.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to play for the Hammerheads,” the Blacksburg, Va., native said. “It’s a dream come true to play professional soccer and I can’t wait to get started.”
A four-year starter for the Seahawks, Mecham opened 67 of 71 games and tallied three assists in his career. He earned Second-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association and NCCSIA All-State honors after starting 17 games as a senior.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Michael and a great pick-up by the Hammerheads,” UNCW Coach Aidan Heaney said. “Michael has grown every year with our program and was ever present in the lineup.
“He was outstanding this past fall for us at center back, performed at a really high level as a leader and captain for our team. His goal was to play at the next level and I’m delighted it will be here locally with the Hammerheads.”
During his junior season, Mecham started all 20 games and tallied two assists as UNCW advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
“I’m very excited to have Michael be a part of our roster plans for next season,” Hammerheads Coach Mark Briggs said in a release by the Hammerheads. “I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to watch a number of his games at UNCW.
“He will bring an enthusiasm and a desire that I’m looking for in all my players. He’s had a fantastic mentor in Aidan Heaney at UNCW and is someone I have high hopes for in 2016.”
