B.J. Tyson scored 21 points and Caleb White added 20 and seven rebounds to lead East Carolina past UNC-Wilmington 78-73 on Wednesday night.

East Carolina (7-4) got its first win over the Seahawks (5-2) since 2008 and the Pirates’ first victory over UNCW in Greenville since Dec. 31, 2005. The Pirates extended their non-conference unbeaten streak at home to 11 games.

The Seahawks took a 43-34 lead after Dylan Sherwood’s layup with 17:42 to play in the game. But a Tyson layup 24 seconds later triggered a 19-8 run for the Pirates to put them up for good at 53-51 with 10:20 remaining.

Two free throws by Chris Flemmings trimmed the Pirates’ lead to 73-70 with 28 seconds left, but East Carolina shot 5 for 5 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the game.

Flemmings led UNCW with 16 points off the bench. Craig Ponder added 14 points and Marcus Bryan pulled down 10 rebounds. The Seahawks went just 3 of 25 from the three-point line and 14-for-21 from the free throw line.

UNCW shot 50 percent from the field in the first half to grab a 39-34 lead at the break, but East Carolina used 24 fast break points to assist in the win.

UNCW suffered its second setback of the season in as many games to fall to 5-2 overall. The Seahawks continued a five-game swing away from home with a trip to Big South Conference member Radford on Saturday.
