With the fall sports season wrapped up for the year, coaches from across the Mideastern Conference recently met to vote on all-conference selections. Throughout the week the complete listings for each individual sport will be posted, starting with girls golf and tennis.
On the golf course, Laney’s Caroline Cahill was named Player of the Year for the second straight season after helping guide the Bucs to a Mideastern Conference Championship. Cahill finished as runner-up in the 4A North Carolina High School Athletic Association Championships held at Pinehurst No. 6.
“Caroline’s performance at states really capped off a great year for our golf team,” said Mideastern Conference Coach of the Year, Sherri Tynes. “Caroline is an outstanding student and golfer. She works extremely hard to be the best golfer she can be. It’s a reflection of her commitment to be her best.”
Sitting three shots back from top of the leader board heading into the final round of the two-day state tournament, Cahill fired a two over par 74 to close two strokes back from the individual champion.
The Laney girls golf team secured the Mideastern Conference Tournament Championship at Belvedere Country Club in Hampstead and Cahill captured individual medalist honors after she out-dueled Ashley’s Katy Flax in the second playoff hole of the match for the one-stroke victory.
“As a team we had several players step up and get that third score in matches,” Tynes added. “Even though golf is an individual sport I feel our girls were really focused on winning that first team championship.”
Flax was also named First-Team All-Conference as she finished in the top 15 at this year’s state tournament.
Sophomore Jayla Rogers (Laney), senior Darby Bagshaw (Ashley) and Anna Moore (Hoggard) round out 4A competitors to earn first-team honors, along with golfers Janie Gooch and Jordan Saunders of South Brunswick.
Laney swept the Mideastern Conference regular season and tournament championship in girls tennis. Erin Nesselroade secured Player of the Year honors and Beau Summersill was named Coach of the Year.
The Bucs went 13-3 overall this season and cruised to a 12-0 mark in league play. Nesselroade advanced to the NCHSAA Doubles Tournament in Raleigh along with teammate Anna-Rae Porcelli.
Kara Ferner (Hoggard) was selected to the Mideastern Conference First Team as the lone regional qualifier to secure a spot in this year’s 4A singles tournament at the state level.
Caroline Harris and Carmen Jordan of Topsail High School earned a spot on the list after impressive seasons for the Pirates in the 3A portion of conference, while Kate Thompson and Suzie Schoolfield round out the list.
