Nancy Wordsworth, 74, of Wilmington, N.C. passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2015.

She was born in 1941 in Rocky Mount, N.C. to the late James and Beulah Carr. She was a graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Education and was an active member of her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. She never lost her passion for teaching or her love for children.

Nancy belonged to Circle #4 at her church, Little Chapel on the Boardwalk in Wrightsville Beach. She loved to read and belonged to several book clubs, including “Death by Chocolate”. She was also very active in other church and social groups, such as “The Lunch Bunch” and “The Great Oaks Garden Club.”

Nancy was married to, and is survived by, her lifelong love, Al Wordsworth. She is also survived by her two children; Alex Wordsworth and wife Miri of Greenville, and Jennifer Cole and husband Hollis of Antlers, Oklahoma. They have five grandchildren: Grey, Emily and Abby Wordsworth and Heather (Tanner) Cole and Nancy Maples. They also have two great grandchildren, Dalton and Hunter Cole. Other survivors include: her sisters-in-law, Ann Carr and her children, Allen (Mandy) Carr, Claire (Larry) Gulley and Hazel Rawls Carr. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Bill and Johnny Carr.

Nancy leaves behind many dear friends, including “The Girls,” who are a group of friends from Rocky Mount, who maintained a close friendship from grade school through her final days. A special thank you to all of her close friends who have loved and supported her during her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Also, a thanks to Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their continued care and support. We would not have been able to keep Nancy in the comfort of her home without the dedication of her caregivers from Senior Helpers, especially Donna Ogden who walked this journey with her “pinky friend forever” for over three years.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, where a Celebration of Life will begin at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk (2 W. Fayetteville St., Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480) or The Benjamin House of Elizabeth City, established in love by one of Nancy’s “girls” (PO Box 757, Elizabeth City, NC 27907).
