Crime notebook: Wilmington man charged in homeless camp stabbing; man injured in Castle Street armed robbery

Wilmington man was arrested in connection with a stabbing that injured a 32-year-old man at a homeless camp Monday night.

Joseph Mark Maccarter, 38, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

Maccarter and the victim reportedly got into a fight near a homeless camp in the 1800 block of South 17th Street at about 11:10 p.m., Lindsay said. The suspect ran from the scene but was arrested by police in area of Physicians Drive in Wilmington.

The victim suffered five stab wounds to the head and shoulder, Lindsay said. He was taken to Cape Fear Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Maccarter was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond.

Man injured in armed robbery on Castle Street

A 30-year-old man was injured while being robbed at gunpoint in the 1100 block of Castle Street at 12:27 a.m. Tuesday, according to Lindsay. The victim was walking in the area when he was approached by five black male suspects, all high school-aged, who wore red bandannas over their faces and carried handguns.

One of the suspects struck the victim with his handgun, Lindsay said. The suspects fled with the man’s cash, cigarettes and lighter.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. The investigation is ongoing.

Weekend report

According to officials with the Wilmington Police Department, the following incidents occurred Nov. 28-29;

  • Police responded to a report of gunfire in the 2800 block of Graham Street just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Several gun shell casings were found in the roadway. No property damage was found.
  • A 25-year-old man was injured in a shooting near North 30th Street and Princess Place Drive at about 1:13 p.m. Saturday. Police found the victim at New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to his right leg. The incident is under investigation.
  • A 29-year-old man was injured in a shooting in the 1600 block of West Drive just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. The victim reportedly tried to break up a fight when he was shot. The investigation is ongoing.
  • A man was arrested after reports of gunfire in the 2800 block of Graham Street at 11:16 a.m. Saturday. Police

    arrested 18-year-old Jose Antonio Torres who was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to sell and distribute heroin and a city ordinance violation. He was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $35,000 secured bond.

According to police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay, these shootings are not related.
