Virgil Eugene Smyers, 62, ‘loved life, music, playing his drums’

Virgil Eugene “Gene” Smyers, 62, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Pender County on Oct. 24, 1953, the son of the late John E and Edith Casto Smyers.

Gene loved life, music, playing his drums, and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He was affiliated with Wholesale Auto in Burgaw and recently retired as manager of the Southeastern NAPA Auto Parts Store in Wilmington.

He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Trisha Smyers Watson and husband, Travis of Rocky Point; a son, Nick Smyers and wife, Christina of Wilmington; one brother, Billy Katalinic of Burgaw; two sisters, Brenda Carney and husband, Wendell of Wilmington and Judy Katalinic of St. Helena; two grandchildren, Kaden Smyers and Kennedy Haney; and many other family members; a close friend, Tom Britt of Wilmington; and aunts, Ethel Mattison, Edna Spencer, Inez Madden.

A celebration of life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 at Epworth United Methodist Church, 409 Fifth Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401, with Pastor Randy Wagner officiating.
