John E. Francis, WWII veteran who traveled with ‘Flight of Honor’ is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

obit flagJohn E. Francis, of Shallotte, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 from complications while riding as a passenger in an auto accident on Nov. 10.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1927 in Rochester, New York, a son of the late Edward and Ida Eccles Francis.

He was a Brunswick County resident since August of 2013 and live before that in Raleigh since 2008. He spent the bulk of his life in Rochester, New York, where he grew up in Gates and Rochester, attending the local schools.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945 and served in the U.S. and Europe as part of the Marshall Plan Army. He remembered his time in the service fondly. He worked 32 years for Eastman Kodak as a finisher in the roll coating division and upon retirement from Kodak, he then drove school buses for Greece Central School district until the age of 78.

in his off time, he enjoyed camping and being with his family and liked to play golf, attended amateur and professional sporting events and play golf even into his 80s. He was absolutely thrilled to travel on the Raleigh area “Flight of Honor” for veterans to travel to Washington, DC and see the memorials, sites and demonstrations. He enjoyed working through the daily Jumble from the newspaper, as well as reading novels and history books.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey Cady Francis, of Shallotte; three sons, Richard Francis (Jean) of Ocean Isle Beach; Rodney Francis (Marion) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Frank Francis, of Joshua Tree, CA, five grandchildren, Cady, Molly, Tim, Bill, and Diana; and three great grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at Arbor Landing in Shallotte after Audrey fully recovers from the auto accident and moves from rehab back to her home at Arbor Landing.
