A New Hanover County Department of Social Services employee has been arrested and charged with embezzlement.
Angelina Bernard, 51, was arrested Tuesday by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and charged with 11 counts of embezzlement, according to New Hanover County Spokeswoman Ruth Smith.
Bernard is suspected of embezzling funds by creating a fictitious company providing tutoring and mentoring services to students, and reportedly funneled funds from her office to the fictitious company, Smith said.
Bernard was placed on an investigatory leave based on state personnel policies, Smith said. She was hired with the Department of Social Services on Jan. 6, 2004 and was serving as the community services coordinator with a current annual salary of $59,634.
Bernard was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under $20,000 secured bond and later released.
