The Score: Frye hits game-winner to lift Hoggard; Vikes, Wildcats cruise in girls hoops

With the score tied and clock winding down in the four quarter, A.J. Frye hit the game-winner on a drive in the lane just before the buzzer sounded to lift Hoggard 54-52 over Coastal Christian on Tuesday night.

Frye finished with a game-high 18 points and Xavier Johnson filled the scoring column to finish with 14 points.

With Johnson guarded along the baseline on the final offensive possession, the senior found Frye on the wing, who used a quick head fake to gain space on the floor for the lay-in.

Jacksonville 44   Ashley 40 

New Hanover 83   Pender 49

New Hanover dominated from the opening tip at Brogden Hall and turned a 21-point halftime lead into an 83-49 victory against Pender in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Four different players finished in double digits, including Malique Jacobs and Blake Smith with 14 points apiece. Ramello Williams added 13 and Accheaus Field had 10 for the Wildcats.

Dixon 71   Topsail 66

Dixon used a big fourth quarter to grab a 71-66 victory over Topsail in Hampstead on Tuesday night.

UNCW commit Matthew Elmore dropped 32 points for Dixon, while Alec Baker and Kodiak Dowling put in a team-high 20 points apiece for Topsail.

 

Girls basketball

Hoggard 66       Coastal Christian 18

Emma Haywood scored a game-high 18 points to lead Hoggard past Coastal Christian 66-18 on Tuesday night. Sophomore Olivia Hawkins added 11 points in the win.

Haywood was 7 of 10 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line, while Aleah Thompson pulled down five rounds to go along with seven assists from Tara Poteat.

Jacksonville 57   Ashley 48

Lola Lovitt hit four treys and finished with 14 points, but it was not enough as Ashley fell 57-48 to Jackonsville on Tuesday.

Dana Craig added nine points and nine rebounds for the Screaming Eagles, while Serenity Williams and Angel Smith put in eight points apiece.

New Hanover 48      Pender 13  

Clinton 44   Laney 36

Baley Edwards led Laney with 13 points in a 44-36 setback to Clinton on Tuesday.

Topsail 61   Dixon 31

Topsail opened the season under new coach Andrew Ellington on Tuesday night and grabbed a decisive 61-31 win over Dixon in Hampstead.

Dominique Bryant led three players in double figures with 15 points. Lauren Caveness chipped in with 12 and Keri White added 11.

North Brunswick 51   Flemington Academy 20

North Brunswick cruised to a 51-20 victory over Flemington Academy on Tuesday night. Taylor Perkins had 12 points and five rebounds, while Aliah Johnson dished three assists and recorded six steals to lead the Scorpions.
