Norma S. Rutherford, 97, former college administrative assistant

Norma S. Rutherford, 97, died peacefully at her home in Wilmington on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry “Captain Hank” A. Rutherford.

Norma was born on Aug. 23, 1918 in Prince Georges County, Maryland to the late Norman Pruitt and Minnie Baker Pruitt.

Norma attended Strayer Business College in Washington, DC. She worked for a number of years as an administrative assistant to N.C. Congressman Harold Coley. She moved in the late 1940s to Raleigh, where she worked as an administrative assistant in the Office of the Dean of the School of Agriculture at N.C. State University.

Norma moved to Wilmington in 1976 with her husband when he retired from the School of Textiles at N.C. State. She continued her career at UNC-Wilmington, where she served as an administrative assistant in the Office of the Chancellor.

Norma is survived by her stepsons, Gordon H. Rutherford and wife Annella, of Raleigh and David A. Rutherford, of Woodbridge, Virginia. She is also survived by grandchildren Gordon, Carolyn, Mary and Stephen; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

A celebration of Norma’s life will be held on a future date.
