A Wilmington man was sentenced to more than eight years in prison in connection with an armed robbery at a Kangaroo gas station in July.

Roger Lee Yates, 42, of Wilmington, pleaded guilty Friday in New Hanover County Superior Court to a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to a news release from District Attorney Ben David.

Yates was charged with the robbery at a Kangaroo gas station located at 6480 Market St. at midnight, July 2, 2015, David said.

The cashier at the gas station reported that a white male went into the store, asked to go to the bathroom and then went after her behind the counter with a silver box cutter in his hand, David said. He demanded money from the register and left the store with an unknown amount of cash.

After receiving photographs from the surveillance footage, Wilmington police were able to establish the identity of the robber as Yates, David said. The defendant was apprehended by the police later that day in the parking lot of the Budgetel Hotel on Market Street.

Superior Court Judge W. Allen Cobb sentenced Yates to 103-136 months in the N.C. Department of Adult Corrections.
