UNC-Wilmington has landed a spot on a national list of the best colleges for beach lovers.

Time’s Money Magazine recently named the local university to its top 10 spots for students hoping to hit the books with their toes in the sand. UNCW came in at number 10 among Money’s picks, each giving off “beachy vibes and academic chops.”

In compiling the list, Money looked at states that border the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico, and then pulled out schools that had easy beach access.

“In other words, no lake, riverfront, or northern, rocky coastal colleges made the cut,” Money reporter Kaitlin Mulhere wrote.

The magazine then limited the list to five schools in a certain state and only one college per city. Each of the schools is approximately 10 miles from a beach, and all, according to Mulhere, are “high-value” institutions with “comparatively strong graduation rates and career outcomes.”

UNCW’s proximity to Wrightsville Beach helped it make the cut, but Mulhere also noted the university’s stellar marine sciene program, Division I beach volleyball team and competitive surfing club.

UNCW shares the spotlight with colleges in locales like Miami, Florida, Manoa, Hawaii, and five along the California coast. The University of California-Irvine came in at the top spot, with San Diego at number two.
