After 20 years, the gym at the Carolina Beach Recreation Center finally has a new floor.
Installation of the new basketball court, a synthetic light-maple floor with a royal blue border, began on Oct. 12. The Parks and Recreation Department opened the gym back up to the public two weeks later on Oct. 27.
“Everything was on schedule,” Parks and Recreation Director Eric Jelinski said.
The department got to showcase their newest addition on Nov. 3 when the gym served as the polling place for the Carolina Beach precincts on election day.
“It was basically an open house,” said Jelinski. “We got a lot of compliments on the floor.”
The floor was completed in time for the department’s youth basketball league season, which starts practices this weekend. According to Jelinski, there are still spots open in the 15-to 17-year-old league.
Though the court has yet to host official league games, Jelinski said several people have come in to play pick-up games and have noticed the difference between the old surface, which had no shock absorbance, and the new top-of-the-line floor.
“It’s a lot, lot, lot better,” Jelinski said.
