No. 2 Ashley 4   No. 31 D.H. Conley 1

Ashley grabbed its 20th win of the season on Wednesday night as the Screaming Eagles picked up a 4-1 result over D.H. Conley in the opening round of the 4A state tournament.

Drew Walters finished with two goals and one assist for Ashley, who improved to 20-1-1 overall this season. Josh Barnello and Duenis Avila also scored in the victory.

The Screaming Eagles have a two-seed in the 32-team bracket and entertain No. 18 Sanderson on Saturday, Nov. 7.

No. 8 Laney 4     No. 24 Harnett Central 1

Eighth-seeded Laney grabbed a 4-1 result over No. 24 Harnett Central on Wednesday night in a game played at Legion Stadium because of wet field conditions in Buctown.

Wesley Nelson scored twice for Laney in the first half and Logan Acuna gave the home side a three-goal lead before Harnett Central broke the shutout with 26 minutes left in the match.

Nelson opened the scoring off an assist from Bobby Atkinson 13 minutes into the first half and tallied his second goal of the night just before the break.

Tyler Kesser added the fourth goal for the Bucs on an assist from Nathaniel Lorenz to send Laney into the second round of the 4A playoffs.

The Bucs moved to 16-3-3 with their sixth straight result and play at home against the winner of No. 9 Green Hope/No. 24 Holly Springs on Saturday.

 No. 20 Hoggard 4      No. 13 Southern Alamance 3

Cesar Cruz tallied twice to give No. 20 Hoggard a pair of big insurance goals as the Vikings held off No. 13 Southern Alamance 4-3 on Wednesday night to advance in the 4A state playoffs.

Austin Redenbaugh put Hoggard on the board in the 17th minute off an assist from Andrew Robinson and the Vikings went up 2-nil midway through the first half before the home side answered back four minutes later.

Cruz scored his first goal of the night on an assist by Redenbaugh to go up 3-1 and Wyatt Williams set up Cruz in the 50th minute to gain enough breathing room for the result.

The Vikings improved to 12-6-4 overall as the 20th seed in the 32-team tournament and face No. 4 Clayton on Saturday, Nov. 7.

No. 23 New Hanover 1     No. 10 East Chapel Hill 0

Paul Horning scored the lone goal of the match on an assist from Declan Payne as No. 23 New Hanover defeated No. 10 East Chapel Hill 1-0 on Wednesday.

Roman Lewis made two saves for the Wildcats, who moved to 17-5-1 with the road result.

New Hanover takes on the winner of No.7 Rose/No. 26 Seventy-First in the second round of the state tournament on Saturday.

 2A tournament

No. 13 North Brunswick 4    No. 20 Greene Central 0

No. 13 North Brunswick kept its season alive with a 4-0 shutout over No. 20 Greene Central in Leland on Wednesday.

The Scorpions took a two goal lead in the second half and found the back of the net twice more of the final 40 minutes of play to advance in the 2A playoffs. Liam Davis, Raunel Dominguez, Cameron Harmon and Bryan Lopez all found the back of the net.

North Brunswick improved to 13-7-2 overall and face the winner of No.4 North Carolina School of Science/Math and No. 29 Croatan.


3A tournament: No. 32 West Brunswick (9-11) at No. 1 Hunt (21-0-1) postponed until Thursday, Nov. 5.

No. 8 Topsail (3-12-2) vs. No. 25 Southern Wayne (9-6-4) postponed until Thursday, Nov. 5.
