A woman has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured her ex-husband in the Castle Hayne area of New Hanover County.

According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer, deputies responded to a mobile home park located at 2709 Castle Hayne Road at about 5:42 p.m. Monday. In the front yard of a mobile home on lot 3, deputies found 28-year-old Jennifer Ann Crampton, who reportedly told deputies her ex-husband had been shot.

The victim – a 31-year-old man – was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by EMS to be treated for a critical gunshot wound to his head. According to hospital spokeswoman Claire Parker, the victim remained in critical condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center as of Tuesday morning.

Deputies arrested Jennifer Crampton on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. She is being held at the New Hanover County Jail under a $1 million secured bond.

Man shot in chest during attempted break-in

Wilmington police are searching for two suspects wanted in connection with an attempted break-in and shooting that occurred at a home in the 1500 block of South 13th Street at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to police spokeswoman Linda Rawley.

Two men reportedly tried to force their way inside the back door of the 36-year-old victim’s home. During the victim’s struggle to keep the back door closed, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the chest.

Police met with the victim at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for the gunshot wound and released, Rawley said.

The gunman is described as a 22-year-old black man with short hair, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. He wore a black zip-up windbreaker jacket. Police did not provide a description for the second suspect.
