Area runners took to the starting line at Boyd Lee Park in Winterville on Saturday for the 4A Cross Country East Regional as Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover punched their ticket to the state meet later this week.

Of the 16 events held through four classifications within the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, the top four teams from each race and individual qualifiers advanced.

Following championship performances in the New Hanover County and Mideastern Conference races, the Vikings clinched the top spot in the regional thanks to a pair of top five finishes for Robinson Snider and Jamie Witmer. Snider closed at 16:20.56 to place runner up to Paul Arredondo (Cape Fear), who took first place at 16:15.15.

Witmer finished 10 seconds behind his teammate, while Henry Kunsz and Xavier McKinley landed in the top 10 to give New Hanover the fourth and final qualifying spot out of the 4A East Regional. Hoggard had four runners in the top 20, including Sydney Wiegman (11th place) and Erik Dahlgren (19th place).

Although their team did not get in, Brian Walker and Connor Riggs qualified as individuals for Laney.

In the girls race, freshman Natalie Tyner continued a memorable run through her first year of competition at the high school level with a third place finish. She was the fastest runner in the county this season and helped put the Bucs in position for the 4A state meet.
