Gene “Pop” F. Rackley, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 69.
He was born Jan. 3, 1946, in Wilmington, son of the late Harry J. Rackley and Frances Bumby Rackley.
Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served from 1965 to 1969. He loved his family and his many, many friends. He also loved his career at New Hanover County schools where he worked from 1998 until the present. When he wasn’t working, he was an avid fisherman who loved teaching his family everything he knew about fishing and living and loving each other.
Gene had many titles: husband, father, grandfather and friend, but his most cherished titles were “Honey,” “Daddy,” “Poppy” and “Pop.”
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; son, Brad and fiancé Laura; daughter, Deborah “Mimi” and husband Kenny; daughter, Sherry Beth and husband Brian; grandchildren, Robert (Haley), Bradley and wife Alyssa, Christian and fiancé Rose, Tyler and fiancé Liz, Jacob, Shelby, Samantha (Justin) and Kristopher; great-grandchildren, Mason Gene, Kaylee and Eli; and his four-legged best friend, Max.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Andrews Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, at Cape Fear Free Will Baptist Church, 5350 Holly Tree Road, with Pastor Pat Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cape Fear Free Will Baptist Church.
Our daddy was as giving in death as he was in life by being an organ donor.
