Laney, Hoggard, Topsail tennis players advance to state championships

Laney’s Erin Nesselroade and Anna Rae Porcelli captured the 4A East Regional doubles title with a three-set victory over teammates Suzie Schoolfield and Kendall Hanks.

Nesselroade and Porcelli dropped the opening set 6-2 before rallying to take the next two, 7-5 and 6-3.

Both teams qualified for the state championships, which will be held at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh on Oct. 30-31.

In singles, Hoggard’s Kara Ferner finished second after suffering a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Rose’s Francis Reed.

The top four players and doubles teams qualified for the 4A state championships.

Semifinals: Singles- Francis Reed (Rose) def. Emma Gentry Landry (Pinecrest) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; Kara Ferner (Hoggard) def. Mary Holton (New Bern) 6-1, 6-1.

Finals: Reed def. Ferner 6-4, 6-1.

3rd place: Landry def. Holton 6-3,6-2.

Doubles: Semifinals: Erin Nesselroade/Anna Rae Porcelli (Laney) def. Emily Hodges/Paige Sumner (Pinecrest) 6-0, 6-2; Suzie Schoolfied/Kendall Hanks (Laney) def. Claudia Ray/Chappy Ray (Pinecrest) 6-3, 6-4.

Finals: Nesselroade/Porcelli def. Schoolfield/Hanks 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Third place: Ray/Ray def. Hodges/Sumner 6-3, 6-3.

 

3A regionals at Barton College

 Topsail will have representation at the 3A state tournament later this week after Carmen Jordan and Caroline Harris clinched two of the top four qualifying spots at the East Regional at Barton College on Saturday.

The top four girls advanced to states in Burlington on Friday, Oct. 30. Jordan finished second in singles play, while Harris claimed third after a 7-5, 7-5, victory over Megan Dyer in the consolation contest. Jordan did not drop a game over the opening two rounds of play before ousting Dyer 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals, ultimately falling 6-2, 6-2 to East Regional Champion Elizabeth Sutton (Eastern Wayne)

Topsail’s Sierra Dougherty and Sara Major were eliminated in the opening round of doubles play 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to end the season.

Doubles-Kassidy Pitchfork /Cassidy Coerner (Aycock) def. Sierra Dougherty /Sara Major (T) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1

Second round: Singles- Jordan (T) def. Alexis Henderson (Jacksonville). 6-0,6-0; Harris (T) def. Jayden Davis (Swansboro). 6-2, 6-0

Semifinals: Singles- Jordan (T) def. Megan Dyer (Clayton HS) 6-4, 6-4; Elizabeth Sutton (Eastern Wayne) def. Harris (T) 6-0, 6-3.

Finals: Sutton (EW) def. Jordan (T) 6-2, 6-4

Consolation: Harris(T) def Dyer (CH)7-5  7-5
