After a scoreless first quarter in Shallotte, the Hoggard Vikings scored their first touchdown with nine minutes left to go in the second quarter and never looked back, beating West Brunswick 30-13 and spoiling their senior night.
Junior quarterback Bryant Sasser hit wide receiver Collin Hairr with a 27-yard pass for a touchdown to open up the scoring. Less than two minutes later, senior linebacker Zak Giuffre picked up a loose ball and scored from 12 yards out after a bumbled snap and missed punt by the Trojans. A two-point conversion made it 15-0. The Vikings scored again with less than a minute to go in the second quarter to take a 23-0 lead into halftime.
While both teams drew blanks in the third quarter, running back Rashod Wallace scored Hoggard’s final touchdown with a little over 7 minutes to go in the game. Less than 20 seconds later, West Brunswick running back Anthony McCray broke out for a 70-yard touchdown to get the Trojans on the board. Junior Tariq Thomas closed out the scoring with a 72-yard touchdown of his own to bring the final score to 30-13.
The Vikings improve to second in the Mideastern Conference at 3-1 (behind streaking New Hanover) and 5-4 overall. Their seniors will be honored next week when they host the Ashley Screaming Eagles.
The Trojans, now 2-3 in conference play and 5-5 overall, play their final game of the season at Laney next Friday.
