Alex Morris Rodger, of Kure Beach, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Davis Health Care. He was 88.
He was born July 8, 1927, in Philadelphia, son of the late James Rodger and Marjorie Banks Rodger, Scottish emigrants.
Alex received a basketball scholarship to Temple University, where he met the love of his life, due in part to his last name. While in college, standing in a line based alphabetically on last name, Alex Rodger turned and met Charlotte Sponsel. It was love at first sight and they began their life of 62 years together. Charlotte passed away in 2012.
Alex was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he attended Michigan State University, where he earned his master’s degree. He worked for more than 40 years at Scott Paper, where he started with an entry level position and worked his way up to a vice presidential level. He was past president of Spring Haven Country Club in Wallingford, Pennsylvania.
In his pastime, he was an avid golfer. Following his retirement, he and Charlotte moved to Kure Beach and became members of Kure Memorial Lutheran Church in 1994.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Rodger.
Survivors include his sons, Ken Rodger and wife Elisa and Byron Rodger and wife Judy; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Jean Haley; and daughter-in-law, Mary Rodger.
