Twenty-six golfers from each of the three regional tournaments qualified for next week’s state tournament on Tuesday. Representing the Wilmington area at the 4A event to be held at Pinehurst No. 6 include: Katy Flax (Ashley), Caroline Cahill (Laney), Jayla Rogers (Laney) and Darby Bagshaw (Ashley).
The top three teams automatically moved on from the regional event, while the top 17 individuals not on top three qualifying teams also advanced. Flax, Cahill and Rogers each closed in top five out of 17 players to move on from the central regional.
Janie Gooch (South Brunswick) and Jordan Saunders (South Brunswick) will be heading to the 3A state championship at Foxfire Resort and Country Club in Foxfire Village after strong performances at the east regional held in Wilson.
The state tournaments feature two rounds of action beginning on Monday, Oct. 26.
Ashley 4 West Brunswick 0
Josh Barnello tallied twice, while Espin Jennings-Giblert and Duenis Avila each found the back of the net to give Ashley a 4-0 shutout over West Brunswick. The Screaming Eagles extended their win streak to 18 straight games and improved to 10-0 atop the Mideastern Conference.
Hoggard 5 South Brunswick 0
Hoggard controlled the pace of play from the opening kick as the Vikings blanked South Brunswick 5-0 on Tuesday.
Cadman Styers put Hoggard on the board in the 23rd minute and grabbed an assist early in the second half when Austin Redenbaugh made it 3-0 as play approached the 50th minute. Jared Robertson also scored twice in the result, while Cesar Cruz finished with one goal and one assist.
The Vikings improved to 7-2 in league play and 11-5-3 overall.
Laney 6 Topsail 0
Sam Shifflett and Wesley Nelson each had two goals as four different players tallied scores on Tuesday to give Laney a 6-0 win over Topsail.
Tristan Nelson and Robert Atkinson recorded on goal and one assist, while David Dailey added an assist.
The Bucs moved to 6-3 in league play and 12-3-3 overall.
Coastal Christian 2 Cape Fear Academy 1
Coastal Christian avenged an early season setback to Cape Fear Academy on Tuesday as the Centurions used two early goals by Douglas McKinney to grab a 2-1 win.
McKinney let the lamp twice in the first 10 minutes of action before Matt Bangert put Cape Fear Academy on the board in the 53rd minute. Al Cavagnaro made six saves in net for CFA, while Hunter Mintz recorded four stops for Coastal Christian. Matt Ward also picked up an assist.
Cape Fear Academy’s final record for the regular season was 14-7-1 overall and 13-6-2 in conference.
