Jack Watson Martin, of Kure Beach, died Oct. 13, 2015, at the age of 83.

Jack was born in South Boston, Virginia. He grew up in various locations in the south before attending the University of Kentucky, where he played baseball and football. He worked for Alcoa for 33 years before retiring to Kure Beach and his island in Canada. He worked tirelessly to establish this wilderness legacy for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean White Martin, whom he called his “guardian angel,” and his children, Tracy Martin DeSelm (Rich), of Chapel Hill and Greg Martin (Anne), of Tallahassee, Florida. He was an exemplary grandfather to Grant DeSelm, Matthew Martin, Claire Martin DeSelm and Emily Anne Martin.

He will be remembered and missed for his tremendous work ethic, love of books, love of sports in all forms, appreciation of a humorous story, sensitivity to those less fortunate than himself and devotion to family, especially his cherished grandkids and granddogs.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary, Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road.

Memorial donations may be made to Help Center of Federal Point, 1121 North Lake Park Blvd., Carolina Beach 28428-4130.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
