The Wilmington Police Department has closed a portion of Ringo Street due to a sinkhole forming in the roadway.

Ringo Street closed to traffic between Lennon Drive and Hunters Trail at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a notice from the City of Wilmington. The area is closed because of a sinkhole forming on the outer travel lane heading toward Hunters Trail.

Ringo Street is a private road that is not maintained by the city, the notice said. City officials said the failure of stormwater pipes in the area are most likely the cause of the sinkhole.

Since Ringo Street is not a city road and the stormwater system in the area is privately owned, the city does not know when repairs will be conducted.

The location of the closure does not impact commercial properties or residences, but Ringo Street is used as a common through street for motorists. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
