Laney Bucs grab Mideastern Conference golf title; tennis wraps regular season

The Laney girls golf team secured the Mideastern Conference Tournament Championship at Belvedere Country Club in Hampstead on Tuesday afternoon and Caroline Cahill captured individual medalist honors after she out-dueled Ashley’s Katy Flax in the second playoff hole of the match for the one-stroke victory.

Cahill closed the day with a 77 after posting a 38 on the front nine, while Jayla Rogers (Laney) placed third as the only other player in the field to finish under 80. Rogers bounced back after an up-and-down nine holes to hit 37 on the back nine.

Hoggard’s Anna Moore took fourth in the competition and Jordan Saunders rounded out the top five with an 87 on the day. South Brunswick had four players in the top 10, including Janie Gooch and Caroline Gland, while Darby Bagshaw placed seventh with a 91 to give Ashley third place on the leaderboard. South Brunswick edged the Screaming Eagles by six shots for runners-up.

Laney continued its impressive run through conference thanks to another strong all-around effort on Tuesday. Erin Nesselroade and Suzie Schoolfield cruised to straight set wins. Kendall Hanks and Jessica Tucker also grabbed a pair of 6-0, 6-0 results.

Carmen Jordan battled to a three-set victory over Kara Ferner 6-4, 5-7 (10-8) as Topsail battled to a 5-2 victory over Hoggard in a match postponed because of darkness midway through doubles action. The Pirates secured second place in the Mideastern Conference standings.

Caroline Harris, Evlie Parra and Sierra Dougherty all secured wins in singles play, while Dougherty and Sara Major grabbed an 8-4 result at No. 3 doubles.

Hannah Marabel recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles for Hoggard and Lauren Traflet recorded a 6-1, 6-2 result for the Vikings on court four.

New Hanover dropped one singles match as Sarah Costa defeated Sydnee Grill 6-0, 6-1, but the Wildcats answered with five individual wins and swept doubles play in an 8-1 victory over South Brunswick.
