Hoggard, New Hanover soccer, volleyball earn conference victories

Hoggard 3    Topsail 1

(25-20, 25-14, 24-26, 25-21)

Hoggard got back in the win column on Tuesday and continued its dominance over league opponents following a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Topsail.

Meagan Trotta paced the Vikings attack with 19 kills. Logan Smith and Kirby Smith combined for 17 kills and Carolyn Davidson contributed in the passing game with 25 assists. Madi Schider was strong in the defense with 24 digs.

Madi Ford led the Pirates with 13kills, while Payton Shoenleber recorded a team-high 19 assists. Marlee Marotta was strong in the defense with 17 digs.

Topsail fell to 7-5 in conference. Hoggard moved to 11-0 in the division as the top team in league play and improved to 12-2 overall.

 

New Hanover 3    South Brunswick 1

(25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21)

New Hanover secured a 3-1 win over South Brunswick thanks to 16 kills by Julia Rhine and five service aces from Alyssa Gowdy. Courtney Loughan also recorded 24 assists for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-5 in conference and 13-5 overall.

New Hanover is currently tied with Topsail for second place in the division and remains poised to make a 4A playoff appearance. The Cougars fell to 4-7 in league play.

 

Laney 3    Ashley 0

(25-15, 26-24, 25-20)

Laney outlasted Ashley 3-0 for the straight set sweep on Tuesday.

Hannah Freas had seven kills and Skyler Curran added five kills. Sarah Jonkheer contributed with four kills and four blocks; while Abbie Paswaters and Alex Erling recorded 11 assists apiece. .

The Bucs moved to 11-9 overall and 4-7 in conference. Ashley dropped to 3-8 in the division and 9-8 on the year.

 

Harrells Christian 3    Coastal Christian 0

(25-8, 25-21, 28-26)

The Lady Centurions dropped another close match in conference play to Harrells Christian on Tuesday. The middles dominated the front row for Coastal. Ally Vernon had seven kills and three blocks, while Julia Masters recorded eight kills. Callie Weaver led the team in digs with 15 and Anna Grace Holdford had 30 assists.

 

Soccer

Hoggard 6   Topsail 0

The Vikings kept pace atop the division standings following a 6-0 shutout over Topsail on Tuesday. Hoggard trails Ashley by one-game for first place in conference and improved to 6-1 in league play.

Cesar Cruz had four goals in the win, while Austin Redenbaugh and Jared Robertson each found the back of the net. Andrew Robinson also finished with two assists as Hoggard grabbed its 10th win of the season.

 

New Hanover 3    South Brunswick 1

New Hanover had three different players score goals in a 3-1 win over South Brunswick on Tuesday. Jack Kiernan, Shaffer Lisle and Delcan Payne all lit the lamp, while Jackson Lumpkin picked up two assists.

The Wildcats moved to 3-4 in conference and 11-7-1 overall. South Brunswick dropped to 0-7 in league play and 4-12 on the year.

 

Fayetteville Academy 5    Cape Fear Academy 0

Cape Fear Academy fell to 6-2 in conference and 12-5-2 overall. The Hurricanes host senior day against Fayetteville Christian on Thursday. Al Cavagnaro had 10 saves in the setback.
