Walter Elliott Cooper, of Castle Hayne, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at the age of 89.

Elliott was born in Wilmington, son of the late Walter Edward Cooper and Rosa Harker Cooper.

He was a watchmaker and jeweler in Wilmington, having worked with Belk’s, Kingoff’s Jewelers, Mills Jewelers, Berman’s Jewelers and Reeds Jewelers over his 50-plus year career span. One of his trademarks was his ability to hand engrave, which is a lost art today. He enjoyed painting and was a landscape artist. He also enjoyed woodworking and being a handmade furniture craftsman. He built a 26-foot sailboat when he was in his early 40s that his family enjoyed for years.

Along with his parents, Elliott was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Thompson Cooper.

He is survived by his sisters, Ida Hope Cooper and Ann Cooper Johnson (Gene); brother, Charles A. Cooper; stepdaughters, Pat Harker (Albert), Linda Ramsey (Roger) and Judy Williams (Bob); nieces, Judy Prince, Gay Johnson and Kathleen Berner; nephews, Howard Lee Johnson, Richard Charles Cooper and Gary Cooper; grandchildren, Teena McMahon (Ed), Jody Harker, Kevin Harker (Mary Beth), Frances Mathisen (Eric), Kim Turner , Shanda Bordeaux (Rusty) and Reagan Deans (Wayne); along with multiple great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Herchenhahn officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
