Gaylord “Gabby” Kraus, of Kure Beach, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at his residence. He was 81.

He was born in McLean County, Illinois on Dec. 15, 1933, son of the late Fred and Harriett Deal Kraus.

He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and a graduate of Purdue University, with degrees in political science and engineering. He retired from Caterpillar with 35 years of service and later worked with Lincoln Office Supply in Peoria, Illinois.

Upon retiring to Kure Beach in 1997, Mr. Kraus worked with the Town of Kure Beach on recreational activities in the community for a number of years. He was an active member and usher at Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church and worked on the membership committee. Early, in his spare time, he enjoyed racing cars at Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin and later developed an interest in photography as a hobby.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Myrna “Kitte” Kraus; daughter, Rebecca Aaron and husband Ben, of Marietta, Georgia and their daughters, Emma Rose and Lesle Kraus of the home; brother, Gary Kraus, of Ft. Worth, Texas and his sons, David and Dean Kraus; numerous other nieces and nephews; cat, Max; and dog, Olive.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church, 1209 N. Lake Park Blvd., Carolina Beach, NC, 28428. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church or Best Friends Animal Society, 2005 S. 1100 E., Salt Lake City, Utah, 84106.
