Emily Gore Varnum, 79, Brunswick County teacher whose students became dear friends

Emily Gore Varnum, of Ocean Isle Beach, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at her residence. She was 79.

Born in Brunswick County on May 7, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland L. and Sarah Louise Hewett Gore.

She was a lifelong member of Jennies Branch Baptist Church. Emily received her bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and taught school in Brunswick County. She kept several of her students as dear and close friends. She was the last of four siblings and was a rock that the family depended on.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. James Varnum Sr.; son, James Varnum Jr.; brothers, Shelton Gore, Gordon Gore and Steve Gore; and a special niece, Andrea “Angie” Gore Ludlum.

Surviving are her daughters, Sarah V. Gore (Richard), of Tabor City and Sandra White (Charlie), of Cary; son, Steven Varnum (Ashley), of Ocean Isle Beach; grandchildren, Rachel Gore, Laura Gore, Christina Leffew (Ben), Kenneth Ballard, Bodhi Varnum and Ethan St. Jean; nieces and nephews, Brent, Jeffrey, Dorothy, Matthew, Becky, Beth, Emily “Mimi”, Audria and Stephanie; uncle, Mark Hewett; special cousins, Faye and Homer Lyles; special friends, JoAnn Simmons, Lois Ann Owens and Julia Hayes; and a host of family and friends who are too numerous to mention.

Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at Jennies Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
