Sports Round Table: Watch New Hanover vs. Hoggard game highlights; administrators make football schedule changes is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

The 2015 high school football season has been like no other in recent memory thanks to dozens of postponements because of weather related issues starting with week one back in late August. Fast forward nearly two months and local programs are still dealing with the same problems with week eight of the schedule getting changed due to safety concerns because of games played some 48 hours ago.

While the West Brunswick versus South Brunswick matchup was moved to Saturday, Oct. 10 earlier this week as both teams played on Wednesday, administrators in New Hanover County have followed suit by moving a pair of contests originally scheduled for this Friday to Monday, Oct. 12. The Laney versus New Hanover game will be on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Laney. The Ashley versus Topsail game will also be played on Monday at 7 p.m. at Ashley.

The decision to reschedule the games was made to avoid the situation where students play two games in a 48-hour period, which could increase the risk of injuries, according to a news release sent to media outlets by New Hanover County Schools.

Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley spoke with Pender County Superintendent Dr. Terri Cobb and Topsail High School Principal Chip Hodges and all were in agreement with the change as a safety precaution. The district confirmed with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) their support of these decisions.

Although administrators were mindful that the rescheduled games are Laney’s and Ashley’s homecomings, student safety concerns drove the decision.

For first-year Coach Jeff Turner, it’s already been quite a year as he leads Ashley into next week as the Screaming Eagles have played just one Friday night game this season. Turner and his team have had to deal with multiple postponements, one game getting moved up to a Thursday night in addition to a pair of road trips on consecutive nights to Onslow County for a date with Swansboro earlier in the year.

Listed below are the game changes and kickoff times for week eight of the season.

With Laney playing on Wednesday, Coach Aashad Yeoman was unable to attend the latest edition of Sports Round Table, a weekly look at high school football across New Hanover County broadcast on the Learning Network.
