Screaming Eagles extend streak to 15 in soccer; Lorenz tallies twice to lead Bucs in overtime

Ashley continued its remarkable run under first-year coach Greg Marinich as the Screaming Eagles extended their win streak to 15 straight games on Thursday following a 2-1 win over Topsail.

For the second time this season, the Pirates controlled possession through most of the match, pressuring Ashley’s back line, but unable to take advantage of strong play in the midfield.

The home side improved to 15-0 overall and remain the team to beat in conference with a 7-0 mark in league play. Topsail fell to 1-3 in the division and 1-7-2 overall.

 Hoggard 3    Swansboro 2

The Vikings returned to non-conference play on Thursday and got back in the win column following a 3-2 result over Swansboro.

Jared Robertson tallied twice within eight minutes to give Hoggard a 2-1 advantage before Cadman Styers provided the insurance goal late in the first half. With the match even at one goal apiece, Styers assisted Robertson for the lead, while Cesar Cruz finished with two assists on the night.

The Vikings improved to 9-4-3 overall and remain one game back from Ashley for top spot in conference at 5-1 in league play.

Laney 2   New Hanover 1 (OT)

Nathaniel Lorenz scored the game-winner in overtime as Laney picked up a regular season sweep against New Hanover following a 2-1 result in Buctown on Thursday.

Laney went up in early in the match after Lorenz lit the lamp for his first goal of the night, but Paul Horning leveled the contest for the Wildcats as both sides play to a 1-1 draw at halftime.

The Bucs moved to 4-2 in conference and grabbed their 10th win of the season to improve to 10-2-3 overall. New Hanover dropped to 2-4 in league play and 10-7-1 on the year.

 Cape Fear Academy 4    Parrott Academy 2

Trailing by two goals to start the second half, Cape Fear Academy stormed back and found the back of the net four times over the final 40 minutes of action to pick up a 4-2 win over Parrott Academy.

Matt Bangert tallied twice to level the contest with scores in the 51st and 63rd minutes, while Holt Robison netter the game-winner. Barton Williams also added an insurance goal late in the match. Robert Schuett, Zach Tomosunas and Ford Wright each picked up an assist. Alex Wenning made four saves in net.

The Hurricanes moved to 6-1 in conference and 12-4-2 overall heading into a key game against Fayetteville Academy.
