As forecasters continue to try an predict the path of Hurricane Joaquin over the next few days, athletic directors and coaches are beginning to make changes to the fall sports schedule heading through Friday night. Heavy rain is expected to continue through the weekend, forcing postponements across the Wilmington area because of saturated field conditions stemming from the amount of precipitation over the last two weeks.
The highly anticipated football contest between New Hanover and Hoggard has been moved to Monday, October 5 as part of a doubleheader at Legion Stadium. The varsity game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m., following the junior varsity matchup, which begins at 4 p.m.
As of Thursday evening, Laney versus South Brunswick and Topsail versus West Brunswick are still on as scheduled for Friday. Ashley and North Brunswick will also face off on the football field Thursday at 7 p.m. in Leland.
The Bucs soccer match against South Brunswick is washed out Thursday, while all high school tennis matches have been postponed until later dates.
New Hanover will play Hoggard Thursday night at Legion Stadium in boys soccer and all high school volleyball matches are still on as scheduled for Thursday.
