Claire Bride Cozzi, 84, retired newspaper columnist

Claire Bride Cozzi, of Shallotte, died on Sept. 29, 2015, at the age of 84.

Ms. Cozzi was born in Spring Lake, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Matthew J. and Claire Burke Bride. Her husband of 53 years, Robert “Bob” Cozzi, preceded her in death in 2014.

She is survived by her daughter, Annmarie, of Wood-Ridge, New Jersey and Avon, New Jersey; son, Robert, of Bound Brook, New Jersey; and sisters, Maryalice Valvano, of Fanwood, New Jersey, Eileen Sales, of Shallotte and Nancy Marie Bride Wengerter, of Westfield, New Jersey.

She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Westfield, New Jersey and Montclair State University of New Jersey. Ms. Cozzi was a newspaper columnist for two New Jersey newspapers and was a freelance writer for various other publications, including The New York Times. A book of her columns was published in 1981.

She was a licensed social worker specializing in domestic violence and was employed by Women Aware, Inc., of Middlesex County, New Jersey as outreach coordinator, from which she retired after 16 years. She also worked as a consultant for the Mental Health Association of Union County and in private practice in Westfield, New Jersey before retiring to North Carolina. She was a member of the New Jersey Counselors and served on the Credentialing Board for Domestic Violence in New Jersey, as well as the Union County Domestic Violence Advisory Board.

After her retirement, Ms. Cozzi served on the board of the Rourk Branch Library in Shallotte and the Coastal Shag Club. She was an active member of Newcomers and played Mahjongg weekly in two different groups.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Robert J. Cozzi’s name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
