Authorities found a Williston Middle School student with a gun on campus Thursday.

School resource officers seized a 9mm Ruger handgun from a 14-year-old girl’s backpack at Williston Middle School of Math, Science and Technology located at 401 S. 10th St, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.

Information was received that a student was in possession of a weapon, Brewer said. Deputies confronted the student, who handed over her backpack. The weapon was recovered and the child was taken into custody.

“The safety of our children is our number one priority; we are committed to keeping our schools a safe environment,” New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said.
