New Hanover extended its win streak to five games on Wednesday night in a straight set 3-0 sweep over Pender.

Senior Paris Backston led the attack with eight kills, while Courtney Loughran recorded eight aces from the service line. Sydney Eavey played a key role on defense with eight digs and Loughran set the offense with 18 assists.

The Wildcats improved to 8-1 overall and remain 3-1 in conference play.

Laney remains the team to beat atop the Mideastern Conference standings as the Bucs rolled to an 8-1 victory over New Hanover on Wednesday.

Suzie Schoolfield, Kendall Hanks and Anna Porcelli dropped just one game each in straight set victories, while Jessica Tucker outdueled Ashlie Atento 6-0, 6-7 (10-7) in a three-set tiebreaker.

Anna Catherine Lloyd grabbed the sole win for the Wildcats at No. 6 singles.

Topsail dropped just three games over singles play to grab a 9-0 result over Ashley on Wednesday. Caroline Harris, Xueyang Li, Sierra Dougherty and Elive Parra all cruised to straight set 6-0, 6-0 victories. Harris and Carmen Jordan also took an 8-0 win as the Pirates’ top tandem at No. 1 doubles.
