Wildcats rally for win over Bucs; Tuesday’s volleyball, tennis recap

Volleyball

New Hanover 3     Laney 1  

(19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-14)

After dropping the opening set at Brogden Hall on Tuesday night, New Hanover rallied past conference foe Laney to record a 3-1 victory. The Wildcats extended their win streak to four straight games and moved into second place in the division.

Sophomore Julia Rhine led the attack with nine kills, while Alyssa Gowdy, Courtney Loughran and Sydney Eavey each served four aces in the result.

New Hanover improved to 3-1 in league play and 7-2 overall. Olivia Backston was strong in the defense with 15 digs. Loughran and Anna Cameron also combined for 30 assists to set the Wildcats’ offense.

Laney dropped to 2-2 in conference and 9-4 overall. Sarah Jonkheer paced the Bucs with 10 kills and Haleigh Somberg finished with 10 digs. Alex Erling also added 16 assists.

West Brunswick 3    South Brunswick 2

West Brunswick remained in the hunt for top spot in the division and took control of the 3A portion of conference as the Trojans swept South Brunswick 3-0 on Tuesday.

Caylen Folmar had eight kills, two aces and 17 digs to lead the Cougars, who fell to 0-4 in league play and 8-6 overall. Kaitlyn Crabtree also added eight kills and Rexi-Lee Harris had 17 digs.
West Brunswick improved to 3-2 in conference and 6-2 on the year.

Topsail 3    Ashley 2

Topsail snapped a three-match losing streak on Tuesday night as the Pirates outlasted Ashley 3-2 in Mideastern Conference action.

Payton Shoenleber recorded a triple-double, with 14 kills, 22 assists and 13 digs for the Pirates. Angelica Biele also played a crucial role in setting the attack with 28 assists, while Marlee Marrotta recorded 29 digs.

Topsail improved to 3-2 in conference and Ashley dropped to 0-4 in league play.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles and continued to roll in singles play as Cape Fear Academy blanked Hoggard 9-0 on Tuesday.

PJ Middleton (No. 4) and Lila Das (No, 6) each earned three-set victories for the Hurricanes, who improved to 4-1 overall. Cape Fear takes on another Mideastern Conference opponent Wednesday when they travel to New Hanover.

Hoggard (2-5) hosts Topsail on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
