Dr. Robert Pool, traveled the world with his wife after retirement

Dr. Robert Smithwick Pool, of Wilmington, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 2015, at his home.

Dr. Pool, the son of the late Ruth Smithwick Pool and James Robert Pool, was born in LaGrange on December 20, 1929. He spent most of his early life in Smithfield.

He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1948. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1952 and from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1955. Dr. Pool had an internship at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston and then served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in France from 1956 to 1958. He had residency training at N.C. Baptist Hospital from 1958 to 1962 and remained as a member of the faculty in the Department of Pathology of Bowman Gray until 1967. From 1967 until his retirement in 1995, he was an associate pathologist at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.

After Dr. Pool’s retirement, he lived in Smithfield and Wilmington and traveled in this country and in Europe with his wife Wanda. Last year, he and his wife traveled around the world visiting his stepson in China. In recent years, Dr. Pool worked part-time at Coastal Carolina Pathology. He is a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Wilmington.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Ellinger Pool; two stepsons, John Timberlake Shepherd and his wife, Lydia of Shanghai, China, and David Lindsay Shepherd and his wife Beth of Wilmington; a stepdaughter Anne Elizabeth Shepherd of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Joseph Shepherd and Robert Shepherd of Greensboro, and Addison Shepherd and Keslyn Shepherd of Wilmington.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Wilmington with the Senior Pastor Beth Hood and a cousin of his wife, Father Dan Hale officiating. His ashes will rest in the Atlantic Ocean, on Sauratown Mountain and in the Garden of Luxembourg in Paris.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made: to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
