Mary Ruth Smith, 80, of Wilmington, went home to be with Jesus Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington with her loving family by her side.

Mrs. Smith was born in Lee County, the daughter of the late John Rogers and Alma Powers of Sanford. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James Fredrick Smith.

She was a member of Forward in Christ Church and was known for her strong Christian faith. She had a deep love for family and everyone she met. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be forever missed.

Carrying on her memories are her five children–daughters Kathy Pridgen of Virginia, Robin Thompson and husband Earl of Rocky Point and Ginger Galleo and husband David of Wilmington; and sons Jimmy Smith and wife Kristy and Michael Smith and wife Dawn of Wilmington. Surviving sisters and brothers also carrying on her memories are Bertha Hicks, Margaret McBride and Pearl Castleberry of Sanford; Marvin Rogers of Florida; Roy Rogers of Sanford; and Johnnie Melton Rogers of Winston Salem.

She was blessed to have several grandchildren–Tiffany Pridgen, Casey Wier, Chelsea Thompson, Corey Biggs, Cody Biggs, Bayley Smith, Tanner Blue, Caitlyn Biggs and Seth Smith. She was also honored with four great grandchildren–Haley Gore, Tylon Pridgen, Hannah Gore and Trent Havens. She will be remembered and missed by several nieces and nephews, as well.

Services will be held at Andrews Mortuary and Crematory Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC, 28412, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Burial will follow at Oleander Gardens. Her sister, the Rev. Pearl Castleberry, will officiate. Friends and family will gather in celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Andrews Valley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Mrs. Smith’s name to: the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. The family would also like to give special thanks to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice and to all of those who were faithful caregivers and friends.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at the home of Michael and Dawn Smith, 8216 Lantana Lane, Wilmington, NC 28411.
