Freeman Edward Hewett, of Supply, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his wife and children. He was 88.

Mr. Hewett was born in Shallotte on Oct. 31, 1926, son of the late Herman S. and Mollie Evans Hewett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth “Kenny” Hewett, in 1993; siblings, Wilber Hewett, Robie Piver, Chancie Hewett and Marcell Wilbur.

He was a dredge operator and self-employed with Freeman Hewett Dump Trucking for over 20 years. Mr. Hewett was a member of the Men’s Ministry at FBC-Shallotte, and lifelong member of the Local Dredge Operators Chapter 25.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ouida H. Hewett; children, Lynn H. Ellis, of Shallotte, Reggie Hewett, of Supply, Lisa Simmons (Charles), of Supply, Van Hewett (Sue), of Supply and Lori A. Hewett, of Supply; siblings, Trubie Hewett, of Supply, Frank Hewett (Irene), of Shallotte, Tincey A. Hewett, of Leland and Lena Causey (Frank), of Shallotte; grandchildren, Erica Smith (Randy), Sara Carico (Ian), Stacey Pye (Greg), Aaron Simmons (Stephanie), Beth Bursell (Mike), Gaston Hewett, Robin Bennett (Cameron), Elizabeth Hewett (Caleb), Kyle O’Neil (Brittany), Megan Freeland, Sarah Coats and Becca Coats; great-grandchildren, Lee Stephens (Crystal), Melody Maraquin, Miranda Smith, Maddi Smith, Grady Effrein, McKenzie Freeland, Ellisyn Carico, Makenna Carico, Grace, Nikkie and Danni Bursell and Jordan, Jada and Jaelah Coats; and great-great-grandchildren, Jarred, Jaren, Neveah Stephens, Colby and Cailey Maraquin.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Brunswick Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Shallotte, where he was a member, conducted by Dr. Robert “Bob” Weathers. Burial will follow at James Walker Hewett Cemetery.
