Police arrest suspect in July fatal shooting

A suspect has been charged with murder in connection with a July shooting death on Metting Road in Wilmington.

Antonio Horton Beatty, 21, was arrested at an apartment complex in the 3700 block of Princess Place Drive at about 8:35 p.m. Saturday, according to Wilmington Police Department Cpl. Leslie Irving.

Beatty has been charged in connection with the death of 25-year-old Carlton Walker Whitley, who was killed in a shooting at Market North apartments in the 3500 block of Metting Road at about 11:15 p.m., July 21.

Whitley was shot during a fight in the parking lot and later died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay said.

Beatty has been charged with first-degree murder and failure to appear on a misdemeanor, according to jail records. He is being held at the New Hanover County Jail without bond.

Beatty is scheduled to make his first appearance in New Hanover County District Court on Tuesday.
