Hoggard picked up its second win in as many nights, completing a dominant performance with a straight set 3-0 sweep over South Brunswick on Tuesday night. The Vikes improved their conference mark to 2-0, and wrap up a three-game in three-day stretch against West Brunswick on Wednesday.
Kirby Smith led the charge with 16 kills, while Carolyn Davidson closed an all-around game with nine kills, four aces and three blocks. Madie Schider had a strong night from the service line with seven aces and also finished with 11 digs. Logan Smith recorded 21 assists in the victory.
Topsail 3 Laney 1
(25-23, 19-25, 29-27, 25-19)
With their Mideastern Conference opener tied at one set apiece, Topsail pulled out a 29-27 victory in set three and put the finishing touches on Tuesday night’s result to close out a 3-1 win over Laney.
Payton Shoenleber set up the attack with 18 assists, while Marlee Marrotta recorded 24 digs to guide the Pirates’ defense. Madi Ford also finished with 11 kills and Angelica Biele had 11 points in the effort.
Topsail moved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Hannah Freas and Sarah Jonkheer led the Bucs with 11 kills and 10 kills respectively, while Alex Erling finished with 13 assists. Jonkheer also had a strong game at net with eight blocks and Skyler Curran served up five aces and tallied 10 kills.
Laney fell to 0-1 in conference and 5-1 on the year.

Four different Wildcats lit the lamp on Tuesday night as New Hanover cruised to a 4-1 victory over Lumberton.
Jack Kiernan, John Cunius, Shaffer Lisle and Moss Lewis also found the back of the net. Foster Willis, James Henry, Declan Payne and Jackson Lumpkin each picked up an assist, while Roman Lewis and Elmer Murillo combined for three saves in goal.
New Hanover moved to 5-2-1 overall and return to Legion Stadium for a date with White Oak on Tuesday, September 8.
Laney 4 Cape Fear Academy 0
Laney ran its unbeaten streak to six straight on Tuesday night following a 4-0 shutout over Cape Fear Academy. The Bucs are 4-0-2 in non-conference play and return to the pitch at White Oak on Wednesday.
Ashley 4 Richlands 0
Drew Walters tallied twice, while Diego Abraham and Josh Barnello both found the back of the net as the Screaming Eagles grabbed a 4-0 result over Richlands.
Ashley is 5-0 overall and wrap up a three-game road trip at Coastal Christian on Friday, September 4.
Coastal Christian 4 South Brunswick 0
Douglas McKinney and Josh Butts scored two goals apiece to guide Coastal Christian in a 4-0 win over South Brunswick. Hunter Mintz made three saves in the shutout, while Matt Ward finished with two assists. The Centurions are 6-0-1 overall and play host to Ashley on Friday, September 4.
Laney 8 Hoggard 1
Kara Ferner scored the lone result for Hoggard at No. 1 singles, but Laney dominated the next five spots in the lineup and swept doubles play to pick up an 8-1 win over the Vikes on Tuesday.
Anna Rae Porcelli pulled out a tiebreaker at No. 3, while Suzie Schoolfield took a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory over Claudia Opper on court number two. Kendall Hanks, Jessica Tucker and Sydney Young also captured individual wins to round out a strong team effort for the Bucs.
Laney moved to 1-0 in conference and 2-1 overall. Hoggard fell to 0-1 in league play and 0-3 overall.
